Koratty Grama Panchayat at a Glance
Koratty Grama Panchayat, located in Thrissur district, is a prominent local body known for its rich agricultural heritage, historical background, and rapid strides into industrial and IT development.
📜 History of Koratty
The region derived its name from the local ruler dynasty known as 'Koratty Swaroopam'. Before the formal establishment of the Koratty Panchayat in 1952, a primitive local governance structure existed. Voting rights were limited to taxpayers aged 21 and above who held an educational qualification of SSLC/Vth Form or higher. They elected a President, who along with 4 nominated eligible members, formed a 5-member governing body responsible for basic duties like street lighting and road maintenance.
In 1952, when the official panchayat came into existence with 7 elected members, it functioned initially from the Koratty Service Co-operative Bank No. 590 building due to a lack of its own building. The geographic boundaries of the panchayat have remained unchanged since its formation.
Historically dominated by feudal landlords such as the Thampans of Koratty Swaroopam, Mangalassery Mana, Poothadi Mana, Thekkedathu Padanayar, and Pallippadan Paulose, the region later witnessed major social transformations with the advent of the National Movement, the Communist movement, and organized labor unions.
🏭 Industrial Growth & IT Era
Once a purely agricultural village with no major industries prior to independence, Koratty underwent a dramatic economic shift with key industrial developments:
